Why BMAP works?
Academic Support: Students are provided with a variety of resources to assist and support their academic performance. Our after-school tutorial program works to improve academic achievement of students through homework help, individualized tutoring in Mathematics, Science, History and English, and preparation for city/state administered exams. High school students receive SAT preparation and are guided through the college process.
Character Development: Our youth are at risk by virtue of their exposure to a myriad of social problems on a daily basis. Clearly, the way in which our youth approach the problems of drug and alcohol abuse, AIDS, teen pregnancy, poor school achievement, crime and violence, racial intolerance, and police brutality are determined by their own value systems. Because these problems pose threats of great magnitude, our youth participants participate in weekly discussion groups designed to help students form and clarify values that will assist them in successfully accomplishing life options. In turn, will center the expectations and thinking of our participants. These discussion groups include: conflict resolution/mediation, prevention of substance abuse, family living, and life and career skills.
Monitoring: Continued school achievement for a student is directly related to adequate assessment and ongoing support. Motivation and tutorial help can be applied meaningfully when the problem is known. We monitor the school grades, attendance, and behavior of our youth participants. Additionally, following a students’ graduation from high school they are kept connected to the Brooklyn Music and Arts Program network through our follow-up and tracking system. Follow-up sometimes involves telephone calls, visits, socials, e-mails etc. In addition, the Brooklyn Music and Arts Program continue to counsel and refer participants needing additional help.
Youth Leadership: We believe that the imperfections of our society and social systems can be peacefully corrected through quality leadership. The quality of future leaders depends upon the training and development opportunities available. Therefore, a Youth Leadership Council has been created to be the voice of our members. They are our drum majors, section leaders and our graduate assistants.
Community Service: Going out into the streets and helping others is one of the best ways to make a difference and enact social change. We believe that while helping those in need, our members can meet friends, develop leadership skills, and gain valuable career experience, and also learn. “Service learning,” the integration of community action with the learning process, raises challenging questions for both students and staff; questions about community, personal responsibility, privilege and poverty, and our role in creating a good society.
Performance Opportunities: Our personnel understand that performance is the end product of practice. We believe that youth performances, when properly staged, provide the glue that binds the community together in common support and togetherness, for the development of youth and the up-liftment of the community. Each year, students participate in parades, concerts, competitions, and appearances with celebrities throughout the United States.
